Listening Post

Helping NGOs tune in to farmers’ needs

Farmers have experiences, perspectives, opinions, needs, ambitions and questions that are important to policy-makers, as well as program managers with NGOs, extension officers and agricultural researchers. With the Listening Post, we have opened a new line of communication from the field to the headquarters and boardrooms of policy-makers. The Listening Post allows partner NGOs to gather real-time feedback on the implementation of their project.

Taking advantage of beep2vote, broadcasters promote a poll question throughout the week, gathering poll results via SMS text messaging or interactive voice response. The results of the poll question are broadcast on the next show, with an opportunity for farmers and experts to contribute to a discussion around the results. The results are also shared with partner NGOs.

In partnership with Lake Zone Agricultural Research Development Institute, N2Africa and the Purdue Improved Cowpea Storage (PICS) project, the Listening Post has surveyed farmers on sweet potato planting, bean planting and use of PICS bags. This project continues to develop partnerships to meet the needs of both farmers and NGOs.

This project was made possible with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
